PRoVisG 2011 Summer School

We are inviting Master students, PhD students as well as Post Doctoral students to the Planetary Robotics Vision Ground processing (PRoVisG) Summer School 2011 in Berlin. The school will take place between the 12th - 16th September 2011 in the heart of the vibrant German capital at the Technische Universit├Ąt Berlin.

Experts will introduce participants to the topic of planetary exploration with the aid of robotic vision instruments. Detailed background knowledge about planetary robotic vision data processing will be lectured.

Participants will have the opportunity to get their hands on planetary data, compute 3D stereo models with the software suite developed within the scope of the FP7 EU project PRoVisG and evaluate the data with respect to rover operation and scientifically interesting features.

A rover traverse drive will be simulated
by providing remote access to a camera system. Participants will be able to point the cameras and acquire images remotely. Based on the evaluation of the vision data products, participants shall direct the cameras to a new view point and repeat this process until a scientifically interesting feature is found.

Some participants will have the opportunity to present the results of this workshop during the European Planetary Science Congress in Nantes (October 2011).

Agenda

Saturday / Sunday
The weekend can be used for travel, tourism or relaxation. Berlins cultural life and venues are some of the most thriving in Europe. So you could use the opportunity to discover the German capital.

Monday

This will be a day with lots of talks and lectures of experts who will give an overview of the projects idea but also on the background and the techniques.

Tuesday

Further expert talks are prepared for this day. However, first hands-on session will be commence introducing you to the software for evaluation of image data. Also the setup for the testbench that will be used during the course of the week to simulate a remote commanded rover traverse will be assembled.

Wednesday

This day will be used to compute first 3D models based on previous field test data or actual Mars Rover data. First images/panoramas will be obtained from the testbench by remotely pointing the camera.

Thursday

Wednesdays results and problems can be discussed during the first session. Later on advance products for operation, such as slope maps, sun elevation maps, can be prepared and evaluated. The organizers will invite members of the Institute and the University to take part in a public presentation of the Results from this Summer School.

Friday
The morning will be used to collect all important results and document these. A Poster will be prepared that will be presented at the EPSC-DPS meeting in Nantes following the Summer School.
