European Satellite Partnership for Computing Ephemerides


The E.S.PA.C.E project aims at strengthening the collaboration in the domains of the development of ephemerides and reference systems for natural satellites and spacecraft by conjugating expertise of main European research centers involved in space sciences and dynamics. The main part of the activity is focused on the extraction and analysis of astrometric data from space measurements not yet applied to the dynamics and to combine them with ground-based astrometric data. By these means, it is intended to provide new dynamical models for several natural satellites, a characterization of their rotation properties, and improved orbits of spacecrafts when possible.


Tasks of the department of Planetary Geodesy of the TU Berlin include:

  • determination of a control point network for the Martian moon Phobos
  • determination of rotational elements for Phobos and other natural satellites
  • determine lunar coordinates for lander modules and provision of topographic maps of the moon
  • planning and analyzing laser ranging experiments to active lunar satellites


This project is funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Community under Grant Agreement no. 263466.
