Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets

Transregional Collaborative Research Center TRR 170: Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets

The scope of the project Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets (TRR 170) is the interdisciplinary study of the late growth history of the terrestrial planets during the phase of the late heavy bombardment. In this context we are working on two subprojects: first, we wish to obtain a full inventory of lunar impact basins. We will investigate the physical characteristics visible in the topography and the gravitational signature of the impact basins. The other focus is on understanding the long-term effects of the impact gardening process on the presence of impact melt of different ages at the near-surface of the Moon.

The project is a transregional Collaborative Research Center located in Berlin and Münster (Germany), founded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The participating institutions are Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), Technische Universität Berlin (TUB), Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU), Museum für Naturkunde - Institut für Evolutions- und Biodiversitätsforschung, Berlin (MfN), and Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt Berlin (DLR).

Lunar Impact Basins

Schrödinger Basin

Lunar impact basins are the only remaining traces of the late heavy bombardment. We will investigate their physical characteristics to better constrain the mass, distribution, and timing of the late accretion flux. more to: Lunar Impact Basins

The Evolution of Regolith

We will simulate the evolution of the impact melt using a Monte Carlo model aiming to improve the knowledge of lunar impact history. more to: The Evolution of Regolith
