Planetary Reference Systems

The objective of Research Unit 1503 is to develop integrative methods and procedures for a consistent definition and realisation of reference systems on Earth and in space. more to: Planetary Reference Systems

Lunar Cartography (LRO)

Künstlerische Darstellung der LRO Raumsonde über dem Mond.
LRO orbiting the Moon.

The Department of Planetary Geodesy is supporting the data analysis of two experiments (LOLA and LROC) of the current NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission. more to: Lunar Cartography (LRO)

Lunar Polar Environment

Lunar southpole with its typical light and shadow patterns due to the low solar elevation angle.

In this research project we will investigate illumination and temperature conditions of the lunar polar surface. Of special interest will be the mapping of potential water-ice reservoirs near the poles. The work is based on laser altimeter data of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). more to: Lunar Polar Environment

Lunar Late Accretion

In the project Late Accretion onto Terrestrial Planets (TRR 170) we are working on two subprojects: first, we wish to obtain a full inventory of lunar impact basins. We will investigate the physical characteristics visible in the topography and the gravitational signature of the impact basins. The other focus is on understanding the long-term effects of the impact gardening process on the presence of impact melt of different ages at the near-surface of the Moon. more to: Lunar Late Accretion

Martian Satellite System

We investigate rotation and shape of the martian satellites as well as thermal and illumination regimes of the martian moon Phobos. more to: Martian Satellite System

Mercury Rotation and Dynamics

Digital terrain model from stereo images and laser altimeter profiles from MESSENGER.

Within this project we improve rotational and reference system parameters of the planet Mercury using stereo images and laser altimeter data obtained by the MESSENGER spacecraft. more to: Mercury Rotation and Dynamics

Observations of the Perseids

Each year in August the Perseid meteor shower can be observed in the night sky. There are regular campaigns for observing the meteor shower. By carrying out simultaneous measurements from two positions the trajectories of individual meteors can be calculated. more to: Observations of the Perseids

Robotic Exploration Framework (ROBEX)

Künstlerische Darstellung des Mars Rovers Curiosity und U-Boot DeepSee

The HGF-Alliance "Robotic Exploration of Extreme Environments" project brings together the scientific communities of deep sea and Moon exploration with the goal of identify and develop innovative Technologies regarding system architecture, sensors, robotics and communication under extreme environments. more to: Robotic Exploration Framework (ROBEX)
